Will Writing

The ABCs of Will Writing

What is a Will

A will is a document in writing (according the Singapore law) which states how a person wishes to distribute his/her assets upon his/her death.

Do I need a Will

  1. If you are married, don't assume that your spouse will inherit everything when you pass away.
  2. If you have minor children, and in the event that both you and your spouse die, who is to have custody of your children? Do you want a looming custody battle?
  3. If you are a single parent with minor children, all the more you should have a Will drawn up to ensure that the best person(s) you can think of are appointed as the Guardian(s) of your children.
  4. If you are single, you may wish that your parents, relatives, friends, charities etc... receive part of your estate.
  5. If you are retired, you may have a Will made a long time ago, and since then circumstances may have changed – your Will probably needs updating.
  6. If there is no valid will then the deceased person’s estate falls into intestacy. Are you willing to have your estate distributed according to the laws of intestacy and allow your estate to be inherited by relatives you may not even know of?

Advantages of a Will

  1. Choosing and appointing Guardians for your minor children.
  2. Appointing trusted Executor(s) and Trustee(s) for your estate.
  3. Ensuring expeditious distribution of your estate according to your wishes which may include leaving behind a lasting legacy.
  4. Providing for your partner, relative, friend or charity of your choice.
